The Alisal Dream Academy needs your help

The Alisal Dream Academy needs a bus to transport 50-plus high school students who want to participate in the Academy's 'Day in the Fields' Project.

The Academy students will work in an organic field in Soledad from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 17. By participating in this project, students gain a deeper understanding and respect for what it means to labor in the fields, a work often perform by their own parents and other community members in their neighborhoods.

If you know of anyone who might be able to help the students out, please contact political science  teacher Ruben Pizarro at  (831) 229-7969.

Alisal High studuents dream of the Big Apple

In 2008, Alisal High teacher Ruben Pizarro took 30 students to see President Barack Obama's inauguration.

For his second inauguration, Pizarro took 60 students.

This year, 90 students have joined "Dreams of New York City" and are raising funds to go to the Big Apple in the spring.

They've raised $90,000. They need $150,000 for all the club members to go.

Yeah, time's running short, so they held a press conference/pep talk on Thursday at the school's auditorium. They received words of encouragement from Salinas City Mayor Joe Gunter, Salinas Union High School District board members Eva Marie Martinez and Phillip Tabera, and Salinas Councilman Tony Barrera.

The students looked happy. Cristian Salcedo, 17, told me he joined the club because he wanted to start developing his business skills. He was elected to be co-treasurer, and it's been an experience to keep tabs of 90 student accounts and the account for the whole group.

It's difficult for their working parents to take them on vacations, Cristian told me. So this is an opportunity they're all eagerly awaiting.

Good luck, guys! You're almost there!

If you want to contribute to these young men and women's efforts, send a check to Alisal High School with "NYC trip" on the memo line. 777 Williams Road, Salinas, CA 93905.

Here's Ruben Gonzalez, co-president of the Dreams of NYC club, talking about the significance of this trip for everyone. Enjoy!

Alisal's "Dreams of NYC" take to the fields

More than 50 students from Alisal High's Dream Academy ventured into the fields in Soledad last week so they could experience what many of their family members and their community members have to go through on a daily basis.

The mission of the Alisal Dream Academy is to expose the students to enriching experiences to empower them. Though their work in the fields, Social Sciences Teacher Ruben Pizarro was hoping the students would better understand and empathize with their families and neighbors.

"We hope to ultimately change the way they see the world around them," Pizarro said.

This particular group of students is raising money to go to New York next year. The Alisal students are turning into such a traveling bunch!

Hail to the Alisal champions!

Alisal High School is hosting a special recognition in honor of the boys soccer and wrestling teams, CCS champions.

First, the champions will have a victory parade through East Salinas, then they'll be feted to a rally in the stadium. The rally will take place Friday, March 22, at 2:15 p.m.

The parade is expected to begin at 2 p.m. at the intersection of Bardin and Williams roads leading to Alisal High.

That should be a fun afternoon, so plan ahead!

The fun goes on for Alisal High students taking part of the festivities at Inauguration Day. We just got some photos. Check them out.

No, we haven't heard from them directly, but you just have to look at their pictures and their families' postings on Facebook: These kids are having a ball. Even before inauguration arrived. They say that pictures are more expressive than a thousand words, so here you have it.

Alisal High Students are off to DC

They woke up early early to catch the bus to San Francisco International airport. Bound for Washington DC, a delegation of about 75 people from Alisal were expected to attend the second inauguration of Barack Obama.

I expect to get lots of updates -- including if some of the members of the delegation will be able to visit the White House.
