Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County receives Excellence in Education honors
The award is given to organizations that offer education opportunities to students countywide, that make transformative and significant impact on students’ quality of life, that addresses an unmet, countywide student need, and demonstrates a commitment to exceeding expectation in pursuit of addressing the challenge.
“We are so honored to be recognized by the Monterey County School Boards Association,” said in a statement Donna Ferraro, President and CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, “We ourselves are not educators, but with the guidance, training, and support of MCOE, we provide effective and measurable programs that address critical after-school and summertime needs – like safety, nutrition, physical activity, mentoring, social and emotional development, homework help, summer learning loss prevention, and targeted academic interventions and solutions.”
Congratulations, Donna and team! I've seen the remarkable work you do for your club members and it's indeed an inspiration.

Monterey College of Law establishes scholarship for alums of Boys & Girls Club
The Monterey College of Law will provide an annual, full-tuition law school scholarship to alumni of the Monterey County Boys & Girls Clubs for each of the next 10 years, starting this fall. The law school will also establish a similar scholarship program with the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Cruz.
"We share an important mission with the Boys & Girls Clubs by providing quality educational opportunities for local students,” said Mitchel Winick, dean and president of the law school, during the announcement of the scholarship at the annual breakfast of the Boys & Girls Club in Seaside.
“This is a unique and exciting opportunity to recognize special students from our community who have worked hard and earned the chance to achieve their dream of becoming a lawyer," he said.
"This special scholarship program not only represents an extraordinary opportunity for our youth, it represents one of the largest financial sponsorships in the history of our organization," said Donna Ferraro, president and chief executive officer of the Boys & Girls Club. "This program is another inspiring example of how our community stands behind our slogan 'Great Futures Start Here'."
Persons interested in the Monterey College of Law scholarship program should contact Mary Dawson at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County at 394-5171.

Happy birthday, Boys & Girls Club Salinas Clubhouse
There they were, politicians and donors, admiring the fabulous voice of Carlota Ciandro, a club member who sang God Bless America. And the story of Erik Zamora, a former club member who now works for the Boys & Girls Club in the accounting department and is a real state investor.
The club is just full of success stories.
There was the urgent plea from Salinas Police Chief Kelly McMillin, who encouraged people to get involved with Salinas youth to help curb gang violence.
Then there was Donna Ferraro, proud mama of Carlotta, Erik, and thousands more, promising more help to 30,000 children in Monterey County who need after-school type of services, if folks dig deep and contribute to the worthy cause.
So dig deep.

Boys & Girls Club names its "Youth of the Year"
Khasandra Ayon, a 17-year-old Seaside resident, has been recognized for her leadership skills with the distinction of "Youth of the Year" by the Boys & Girls Club of Monterey County.
Khasandra Ayon now goes on to compete for the Northern California area council title and $1,000 scholarship.
Khasandra is a natural leader, writes Robert Mendoza of the Boys & Girls Club. "As President of our Keystone Club ... Khasandra has motivated other youth to serve their Club and community -- organizing service projects that include exceeding fundraising goals for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and successfully fundraising so that Keystone Members, including herself, were able to represent BGCMC at that Boys & Girls Clubs of America's National Keystone Conference in Florida."
Khasandra received a paid internship at the club and she "very quickly set herself apart from other Interns," Mendoza writes. "She moved beyond basic assignment of general role modeling and supervision of younger members to proposing and initiating a journalism and writing club."
"I am proud and happy for Khasandra as she takes the next steps in achieving her goal of obtaining a California College of the Arts higher education," said Boys & Girls Club president Donna Ferraro. "Khasandra has overcome many family hardships and worked hard for this achievement. She is well on her way to pursuing her dream of being a published author and developing her passion for writing into a career that contributes to the greater good."
