Nov. 19 marks the 300th anniversary of Junípero Serra's birth, and CSUMB professor Ruben Mendoza, a scholar on the California Mission system, has been busy granting interviews.
An interview Mendoza did for Eternal Word Television Network, a global Catholic radio and television network, will be aired at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 21. EWTN is available on DISH Network, Direct TV, and Comcast Digital Channel 229. His interview will also be available online here.
Mendoza has also been interviewed for a Catalonian mini-series on Serra, which began airing in the Balearic Islands in September and is expected to air in Mexico in the near future.
If the mini-series is as good as the promo, I can't wait to watch it.
And speaking of Serra, CSUMB will host a symposium on Serra's legacy on his birthday.
Serra is credited with founding the first nine of the 21 missions in Alta California. The missions were instrumental in the advance of European colonialism, and in the subjugation of Native Americans to the colonial powers.
The symposium will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the University Center living room, and will include presentations by Rose Marie Beebe and Robert Senkewicz, both professors at
Santa Clara University. Guest
panelists will include Ann Marie Sayers of Indian Canyon; Kathryn
England-Aytes, a psychology lecturer at CSUMB; and Father Carl Faria of
the Diocese of Monterey.
In conjunction with the symposium, an exhibit of mission photography by Mendoza will open in the Student
Center West Lounge at 5 p.m., Nov. 14.

But the state will close its doors if it can't find money to retrofit its adobe walls. DeBono and Rosen hope their film "An Island in Time" will inspire rescue efforts.
Missions are important elements of our history -- an important project for fourth graders! The film premieres at the Carmel Film Festival on Saturday, Oct. 13 at noon at in Youth Center Theater, 4th and Torres in Carmel.

Monterey County schools get grant to visit missions
The California Missions Foundation has presented an $8,046 grant to Monterey County schools for fourth graders to visit the San Antonio and San Juan Bautista missions.
“We are delighted to expand our All Aboard the Bus program from Southern California to Monterey County and are grateful to the Monterey Peninsula Foundation and the Upjohn California Fund for making this possible,” said Dr. Knox Mellon, Executive Director of the California Missions Foundation.
The $8,046 will be distributed among 15 schools in Monterey County. The funds will allow 1,065 students, and more than 60 teachers and chaperones in 38 classrooms to visit the missions this spring.
The “All Aboard the Bus” Program also provided classroom kits of materials (cd resource for teachers, mission collector cards, glossary of mission terms) that will aid teachers in presenting the history of the missions, as well as helping students complete assigned mission projects.
Fifteen elementary schools that serve disadvantaged children in Monterey County applied for the money last fall. The monies will cover 80 percent of the estimated total cost of transportation and admission for students, teachers and chaperones. The schools had to raise the remaining 20 percent of the money through fundraising and other means.
