Little Bellas camp, for the budding cyclists

The Sea Otter Classic is not just for adults. Girls ages 8 through 14 can participate in a one, two or three day cycling camp, with some scholarships available.

Girls will hone their mountain biking skills, whether they are brand new or ready for a new challenge. The focus will be having fun and improving skills, and girls will be grouped by age and ability.

An additional focus will be feeling right at home at the Sea Otter Classic, mountain biking’s biggest festival and one of the world’s largest bike festivals. Girls will have a full-access pass for Sea Otter festival activities, and they’ll have the chance to meet and learn from mentors who are among the world biking community’s favorite pros.

The Little Bellas Day Camp takes place April 19. Day camp scholarships are available.

Alisal Union kicks off basketball league

About 450 children are expected to participate in the district's first annual basketball league, which will kick off Saturday at 11 a.m. at Martin Luther King Academy in Salinas. Ten coaches has been hired for ten of the school sites, said Francisco Estrada Jr., coordinator of the program. Superintendent John Ramirez and the board of trustees are expected to lead an inaugural ceremony at 12:30 p.m. In these day and age of childhood obesity, having more sports available at school sites is key, so way to go, Alisal students!

Safe Routes grant to benefit Monterey Peninsula students

The Monterey County Health Department has received $375,000 as part of a Safe Routes to School grant from the California Department of Public Health’s Kids’ Plate program. The Safe Routes to School grant will bring pedestrian and bike education to schools as well as traffic enforcement around the schools and the surrounding neighborhoods.

The 21-month long grant begins on March 1, and will benefit Ord Terrace Elementary, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, Highland Elementary, Del Rey Oaks Elementary, and Marina Vista Elementary.

While a large majority of students live within one mile of their schools, many of the parents still drive their children to school. This reduces the exercise a child gets and increases traffic around the schools.

The lack of exercise may contribute to the high childhood obesity rates in Seaside, which is at 46 percent, the third worst in Monterey County. Furthermore, driving children to school causes major traffic congestion around schools in the mornings and afternoons.

A unique feature of the grant is having the children practice with a mock town brought to their school. As part of the mock town, students will work with pretend traffic situations such as cars backing up in driveways and/ or drivers who are distracted, and learn to recognize these problems and how to protect themselves.

Walk to School Day coming up

Want to improve your health and advise Monterey on how to make safer routes for students to walk and bike?

Take part of "Walk to School Day" on Oct. 3 -- although Monterey's making a week out of it.

Monterey city officials are sponsoring a week-long event to promote pedestrian safety and the enviromental benefits of walking for students who attend Colton School.

Currently, most students arrive at Colton by school bus, MST bus or car. During "Walkt to School" week, students will be encouraged to walk from home or “Drop-off and Walk” locations approximately one mile from the school. Those who bus to school will be allowed to count their walk from home to the bus stop.

Healthy snacks and water will be provided each morning to those who participate. Students who walk all or most days will receive special prizes such as gift certificates to local eateries, movie theaters, laser tag, miniature golf and the iTunes store.

The Physical Education class with the most collective days and miles walked at the end of the week will be rewarded with a class party. Some of the barriers to walking and bicycling to Colton and other schools in the area are the steep topography, distance, pedestrian infrastructure near the school and lack of adult supervision on campus before first period.

The week-long experiment will result in recommended new pathways and solutions to be included in a citywide bicycle, pedestrian and transit plan called "Monterey on the Move."

But Monterey is not the only city participating.

There are four schools in Seaside signed up (Seaside Middle, Martin Luther King, Ord Terrace and Del Rey Woods) and who knows how many more I haven't seen. So let me know!

Back to school: a new chance to start biking

Mari Lynch, Monterey County bicycling enthusiast extraordinaire, would like to remind everyone that biking is a fun and healthy way to get to school. And the start of classes is also a great opportunity to launch new habits. In her blog, Mari lists a few local schools that make it easy for their students to bike (Pacific Grove Middle School, Jack Franscioni Elementary in Soledad).

Do you know of any other school that has a good bike-to-school program? Send me or Mari the info.

Also, Bike Party has come to Salinas! It will be the first Friday of the month, and it already began in August, so the second installment's coming up next week, Sept. 7. Check it out here.
