Among other activities, participants will be able to:

The benefits of the program include:
Useful knowledge for being an involved citizen, and for careers in government, the law, and business.
Valuable experience to list on a college application or resume
Opportunities to apply for voting membership on City commissions or committees.
A stipend will be paid after the completion of all sessions, and food and transportation will be provided. Salinas residents aged 14-18 are eligible to apply.
The Youth and Government Institute will be taught by the City's Neighborhood Services Coordinator, Ana Ambriz, and Vivian Salinas, a City recreation coordinator.
The deadline for applications is June 22. Applications are available for download on the City's website here.
More information is available from Ana Ambriz at anaa@ci.salinas.ca.us or (831) 758-7166.

Monterey area girls chosen for AAUW science camp
Brenda Ortiz Cardenas from Los Arboles Middle School in Marina, Anna Chassion from Buena Vista Middle School in Las Palmas, and Olivia Pearman from Pacific Grove Middle School will be attending this summer's STEM Camp Grace Hopper at Stanford University, courtesy of the Monterey Peninsula Branch of American Association of University Women.
Seventy-one girls were nominated by their math or science teachers, 34 girls applied, ten girls were interviewed and these 3 girls were chosen for the camp, said Marilyn Erickson, Tech Trek Coordinator of the AAUW Monterey Peninsula Branch.
"AAUW branches raise the funds for each camper, $1,000 for each girl. This year we raised the $3,000 by member donation and by a grant from the Yellow Brick Road Benefit Shop in Carmel," Erickson said. "Our 3 girls will join 75 other girls from Northern California to live at Stanford University for a week, living in a dorm, eating in the student dining hall, and attending classes at the university."
The girls select their core classes of Forensic Science, Marine Biology, Engineering/Motion, Cyber Security, 3D Math, or Applied Inventor/Coding. The camp was started in 1998 at Stanford with AAUW sponsorship. A 7th grade girl can only go to this camp if chosen by her AAUW branch and paid for by the AAUW Branch.

Assemblyman Alejo graduates last cohort of Young Assemblymembers
Thirty-two Central Coast high school students graduated last week from the sixth and final Young Assemblymember Program offered by Assemblyman Luis Alejo. The four-week program, which Alejo has held every year in the district since taking office, concluded with a mock legislative hearing Friday at the Monterey County Government Center in Salinas. A graduation ceremony followed. This will be Alejo’s final Young Assemblymember Program. He is leaving office in December.
“Meeting and working with these hard-working and motivated young people from our community every summer has been one of the highlights of my service in the Assembly,” Alejo said in a statement. “It has been my honor and privilege to mentor them and give them a taste of civic involvement and leadership. More than 160 students have completed this program over the past six summers. Graduates from this program have gone on to become stellar students at top universities, including UC Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford and St. Mary’s College.”
The Young Assemblymember Program was open to high school and first-year college students who reside in or attend a school within the 30th Assembly District. The program offered workshops on legislation, community organizing, debate skills, team building and conflict resolution. The graduates have been able to interact with business professionals, attorneys and community leaders throughout the program.
Students who have completed the program received a Certificate of Recognition, a letter of recommendation from Alejo and a tour of the California State Capitol, where they observed an Assembly Floor Session and interacted with lawmakers. The program was provided at no cost to the students or their families.
Will it continue with the next assemblywoman? (and since there are two women in the race, it for sure will be a woman in that post) Stay tuned...

Hartnell's summer math academy wraps up with barbeque
Hartnell College feted about 200 students Friday as they wrapped up their Summer Math Academy. Students receive no college credit but participate simply to refine their math skills -- many of them to overcome their fears. Like Gloria Gutierrez, who's planning on studying kinesiology at San Jose State, and needs to get her math courses before transferring.
"It helped," she said. "But I'm not completely over it."
This is the ninth session of Hartnell's biannual Math Academy under the direction of Hartnell Math Professor Ken Rand. But it's the first time they have a barbeque!

Literacy Lab at MPUSD wraps up another year
Twenty teaching credential candidates from Cal State TEACH took part in the yearly Summer Learning Lab at Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. This year, the lab took place at Martin Luther King Elementary, where limited English speaking children were given specialized attention by teachers in training.
The students receive one-on-one support two hours a day. Later on, the children take other enrichment classes through the summer program MPUSD runs.
The results achieved through the lab are "phenomenal," according to organizer and former MPUSD principal Roger Dahl. "Students in many cases make progress equal to what they achieve during the school year in only three weeks of focused instruction."
Yay for attacking the "summer learning loss"

Ciclovia coming to Salinas -- youth interns wanted!
Bicycling enthusiast extraordinaire Mari Lynch's helping promote an exciting event coming to Salinas soon.
Ciclovía Salinas
There's been five successful Ciclovías in Los Angeles -- they call it CicLAvias down there, just to be cute -- and everyone reports they're way fun. Basically, people get together to ride their bikes among city streets to make them safer and promote better communities and neighborhoods.
There's already a Bike Party, so Ciclovia sounds like a natural next step. And organizers are looking for a youth intern! Deadline to apply is June 15.
The first Ciclovía Salinas is tentatively scheduled for August 25, 2013. For more information or an application, click here.
